What Is Short-Term Memory Care?
Short-term memory care refers to specific care services over a period of three days or more. Memory & Company is staffed by professionals trained and specialized in dementia care, including Alzheimer’s care.
Short-term Memory Care is called short-term because there is a designated pick-up date in mind. This is often utilized for families looking for a short getaway or break from caregiving responsibilities, hired caregiver vacations, to extended family vacations or business trips. If families are uncertain of end dates, then we would recommend our long-term stay option such as those with caregivers requiring surgery or medical care, or those awaiting a long-term care bed of choice.
Short-term respite care offers the same quality of services and programs as our long-term accommodations. This respite care is beneficial to both the person with memory loss and their care partner, whether it be a family member or a hired individual.
These programs and services are designed to the person’s needs in the way of socialization, cognitive and physical fitness, recreational activities, and daily living tasks. All short-term stays receive lodging, personal care assistance, medication management and nursing services, and gourmet meals in a highly secured environment.
Life at Memory and Company
Memory & Company is the world’s first respite hotel and premium day program facility, whether at our Markham or Oakville locations. We are regulated by the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA) and are a Member of the Ontario Retirement Communities Association (ORCA).
In addition to short-term accommodations, we offer day programs and long-term accommodations. All services provide programs that focus on slowing down the progression of memory loss while engaging in everyday living activities.
Our respite short-term hotel services include the programs offered at our day spa, as well as personal care services and the safety and security of our suites. The care at our programs and respite hotel provides a ratio of 5:1 minimum of professional care services and 24-hour on-site nursing.
Facilities and Services
Both facilities in Markham and Oakville provide all three service programs. Our short-term programs and accommodations focus on the individual with memory loss and allow their care partner respite from the day-to-day demands of caregiving.
All short-term accommodations include a furnished suite with washroom, laundry, housekeeping, all personal care, meals, 24-hour nursing care, medication management, our Premium Day Program, use of common spaces, and utilities.
In addition to configured programs based on an individual’s needs, the safety and well-being of all Members were taken into consideration with the design of our state-of-the-art facility.
Memory & Company’s activities are designed by taking the current stage of the individual’s memory loss needs into account. These programs include baking and cooking, gardening, spa activities, sports, and movie times. Everyone deserves to look and feel their best, and that’s why we have a beauty salon including massage and spa services on the premises. Anytime a Member requires the dentist or physiotherapy, we have a professional team ready to come to the club.
What Makes Us Stand Out?
Aside from being the first Respite Hotel and Premium Day Program in the world, we also pride ourselves in providing the best supportive care for those with memory loss and their care partners.
Our compassion extends beyond our services, as shown during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, when our owner and his family moved into the hotel to assist the team of staff and provide care for our Members.
As a smaller environment than large care homes, we are able to give personalized care and support based on the individual’s needs as opposed to a general program of care. This support extends to the caring partners of the Member, too. We strive to make everyone’s life a little easier by educating, supporting, and advocating on the Member’s behalf when needed.
How to Book a Short-Term Stay
Whether the Member is in the early stages of dementia or has been trying to grapple with memory loss for years, we are here. As a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week club, we have customized short-term stay options.
Our easy-to-book respite lodgings include access to all of our personal care services and adult day care programs. A short-term stay of at least three days can be transferred to a long-term stay to end as the Member requests depending on availability.
